What are Pattern Blocks?
Pattern Blocks consist of 6 shapes ~ hexagon, trapezoid, rhombus, triangle, square and thin rhombus. Each block shape is a different colour. Pattern blocks fit together so well because their sizes are all fractionally related to each other. Activities encourage students to use these blocks to create geometric designs. Ultimately this leads to the exploration of fractional relationships.

Who am I?
Recognising and naming basic shapes is an important part of early learning.
Before introducing all the activity cards, make sure that your child knows the names of each of the shapes, as shown on card 1. You can also compare the features of each shape, for example: how many sides/edges, length of sides, how many corners/points, etc.?

I Spy games
• I spy a shape which has 6 sides. (Hexagon)
• I spy a shape which is blue (Rhombus)
• I spy a shape which has 1 long side and 3 equal (same length) short sides (Trapezoid)

Make-a-new-Shape
• Make a diamond using 2 triangles.
• Make a hexagon using 3 blue rhombi (plural for rhombus)
• Make a triangle using 1 trapezoid and 1 triangle

Creativity
• Your child will enjoy creating his own patterns and designs
• Use the shapes as templates. Draw around each shape and cut out the drawings
• Make a shape page in your child’s scrap book. Label the shapes
